Edge of Maine Frame and Gallery provides custom picture framing, archival preservation, and conservation services for artists, collectors, institutions, and families. We specialize in museum-quality framing for paintings, works on paper, historic photographs, textiles, objects, and three-dimensional pieces, using conservation-grade materials and reversible methods wherever appropriate.

What it costs

A finished 16 × 20, ready to hang, generally runs $120 to $180 depending on glazing and moulding. Conservation work on heirlooms varies more. The consultation is free and takes about twenty minutes.

How we work

Every project is a conversation. We help you select frames, mats, and glazing that protect the work while honoring its character and context — fine art, family heirlooms, diplomas, memorabilia, and contemporary pieces that need non-standard solutions.

Scanning, restoration, and reproduction

We offer high-resolution scanning and digital restoration of photographs and documents, repairing tears, creases, fading, and loss while preserving original detail and tone. Restored images can be reproduced as museum-quality prints. We also digitize glass plate negatives — work we take on by mail as well as in person.

Why conservation matters

Artwork and historic objects are vulnerable to light, acidity, and improper materials. Conservation framing uses archival papers, stable supports, and reversible methods to slow deterioration without altering the original work. The goal is not restoration for appearance, but preservation for longevity — so objects can be safely handled, displayed, and passed forward intact.

About

Forty years of framing, a Master of Fine Arts, and this shop on Main Street since 2006 — in a building that was a wholesale bakery, then a café and ice-cream shop, before it was a gallery.

Before framing became the focus, the work was photography: the neighborhood, then birds and flowers, then aerial views, which led into the history of the town and its land. It’s the same habit either way — looking closely at objects, images and histories, and making decisions so they endure.
